what is a haiku?

I got to thinking...what is a haiku?

According to HAIKU for PEOPLE a "Haiku is one of the most important form of traditional Japanese poetry. Haiku is, today, a 17-syllable verse form consisting of three metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables."

The modern haiku is usually of a seasonal theme. Since it's Winter and my photo is of a lamp, I can't help but think of the same chilly season. I'm curious to read whether you will keep yours the same.

Please don't forget to send me your haiku to go with my photo prompt. I'll start publishing them this Wednesday.

Yes, I must post a photo or two...
